Stages of a Successful Home Remodeling Project

Traditional Style Kitchen Renovation Lampasas Texas

As a custom home builder and general contractor, we at Westrock Contractors have planned and completed various home remodeling projects for our clients. From updating individual rooms like full kitchen remodels or complete bathroom remodels to entirely rebuilding homes from the ground up, I’ve learned that any remodeling project requires careful planning and execution of its stages to achieve results aligned with your vision.

I want to start out by addressing the definition of a home remodel; a remodel changes the form of something like adding a new shower to an existing bathroom or replacing the cabinets in your current kitchen. A remodeling project can range anywhere from a full home addition, adding square footage to your existing home, to something as simple as upgrading or changing just one room in your home. Either way the most successful home remodeling projects require five stages: planning, budgeting, demolition, construction and cleanup.

#1 Planning

Create a plan by doing as much research and information gathering on your own before talking to a professional contractor or home builder. Stay organized! Make a list of “must haves” and also a list for optional items. Sticking to your list will help your remodeling project stay on budget and on schedule.

#2 Budget

Your custom home builder or contractor will need to get estimates from individual contractors to give you an exact cost for your project. The products and selections you choose for your home upgrades will determine a majority of the total cost. Start looking for financing and determine if the remodel increases the value of your home by more than what the project may cost.

#3 Demolition

Be sure to prepare your family for the disruption in your home that the demolition stage of your remodeling project will cause by removing breakables, protecting valuables, and covering furniture and floors.

#4 Construction

Consider moving out of your home during the construction stage of your home remodel, especially if the project is a very large one. Most remodeling jobs will require the homeowners to be without electricity or water for a period of time.

#5 Clean-up

This stage of remodeling is labor intensive and goes more smoothly if some cleanup has been done along the way during the construction stage. Once all the dust and debris is removed and your beautiful new home is complete, you can begin to enjoy your new space!

The most important part of a remodeling project is the safety of you, the homeowners. As long as you hire a professional and reputable remodeling company, contractor, or custom home builder, your home will be safe for you and your family during a home remodel. For large projects, a good builder will plan and communicate with you, and advise when it is best for you to move out during the construction. Our Westrock Team would be thrilled to help you with your home remodeling project!
